DALLAS – For the second year in a row, the Dallas Business Journal has named Michael Richardson of Dallas’ Rose•Walker L.L.P. to “The Defenders” listing of the top 15 business defense attorneys in North Texas.

 

In order to compile “The Defenders” list, the Dallas Business Journal solicited nominations from across Dallas/Fort Worth in search of attorneys whose reputations and track records put them among the area’s top defense attorneys for corporate clients. The final list of honorees appears in the publication’s May 14 edition.

 

Mr. Richardson, who serves as Rose•Walker’s Administrative Partner, handles courtroom trials in state and federal courts throughout the United States, including representing companies in personal injury and wrongful death cases, commercial disputes, and intellectual property matters. Companies frequently call on Mr. Richardson to work as replacement counsel in order to turn around troubled lawsuits.

 

“I’ve handled so many cases in that fashion that it’s almost a specialty,” Mr. Richardson told the newspaper. “It’s a bit like being a fireman. You get called on when something has happened and your job is to limit - or eliminate - the harm.”

 

The biggest trend Mr. Richardson says he sees in business litigation is a willingness by most companies to choose arbitration over going to court, which is not always a good thing.

 

“Businesses have been sold on the idea that they’re better off avoiding the courthouse and instead submitting any dispute they may have to arbitration,” he says. “The truth is that businesses may have been sold a bill of goods on this. Arbitration can be very unsatisfying; it can be lengthy and expensive and you often end up with a Solomon-like, split-the-baby type of decision.”
