Our website, and indeed our firm, would not be complete without a mention of Hal Walker.

Hal was a unique individual, a tremendous and talented lawyer, and most of all a very good friend. I was fortunate to have started a business with him, and I wonder sometimes whether Hal looks down every now and then and chuckles at what we started and what it’s become. Like me, I think he’d be somewhat amazed and enormously proud.

Hal loved being a trial lawyer, loved being in the courtroom to try a case, and was incredibly good at it. He didn’t mind the so-called adversarial nature of law and maintained friendships with many of those in our profession, even lawyers who at one point may have been on the opposing side.

Hal loved good food and good wine, loved his family and friends, and loved life. I had expected that the two of us would work together for many more years and then someday watch the younger lawyers take over, but Hal moved on before any of us expected.

I still miss him.

Once every week, Hal would send along his “Words of Wisdom,” thoughts or sayings he had come across and wished to pass on to the rest of us. It was all part of the battle he waged against mediocrity. And because that’s eternally important, I pass along one of those thoughts here:

“Excellence can be attained if you care more than others think is wise; risk more than others think is safe; dream more than others think is practical; and expect more than others think is possible.”

That’s the kind of standard Hal Walker aspired to. If we remember nothing else about him, we owe it to ourselves and our clients to think about excellence and to do our best to make it happen every single day. Hal would expect nothing less.
